Came across this article in the post this morning while doing my morning news scan. The article speaks about increasing hazards on the popular WO&D trail, due largely to increased commuter traffic etc.
I really hope the article doesn’t do more harm than good by scaring folks off the trail or causing someone on the verge of selecting bike commuting to choose not to. Despite a slightly negative gloom and doom tone of these increasing dangers and it’s comparisons of the trail to the beltway I definitely saw the upside to the situation. Obviously with traffic increasing on trails like this it means more and more folks are either commuting via bike and or just discovering the joy of riding and the benefits that come along with it. (Health and Wallet wise) With $3 dollar a gallon gas and ever expanding waste lines on the rise I think finding ways to accommodate increased bike path traffic is a very small price to pay…

“It’s not so much the speed. I just wish I hadn’t drunk all that cough syrup for breakfast.”
In terms that normal humans can understand… The article does a disservice to cyclists. It implies that people ride a bike fast and as a result crash and die. It is rarely that simple. People are idiots. That goes for walkers, bladers and cyclists. It is the combination of factors that make things dangerous. Being wise helps, but doesn’t make cycling 100% safe.
Maybe it’ll scare some people away and get them back in their Hummers where they belong.
